About the Workshop:
The origins of African rhythms are closely tied to spoken language, as African drums communicate through rhythm. In this workshop, we tap into this connection by vocalizing traditional rhythmic patterns from the percussion traditions of West Africa. Through the voice, we channel the energy of the rhythms, which in turn awakens our respiratory system, body movement, and natural sense of timing. As everything falls into place, the mind quiets, observes, and we ultimately become the rhythm itself.
A fundamental component of African rhythms is polyrhythm. One rhythm is often a combination of several shorter rhythmic phrases that interact in dialogue.
We will study a rhythm called Kotedjuga in a polyphonic style. According to Mamady Keïta, one of the foremost ambassadors of African percussion, this rhythm is traditionally dedicated to the caste of jesters and clowns.
Originating from the Wassolon region of West Africa, Kotedjuga is a 3/4 rhythm known for its rich phrasing and intricate counterpoint.

Michael Afolayan is a visual artist, musician, rapper, and theater and circus performer. He also works as an instructor at the Circus Days acrobatics school, teaching basic acrobatic techniques. Additionally, he is the founder of the Cultural Center of African Arts and Cultures ANASA, where he teaches polyrhythmic music of West Africa and promotes the arts as a means of communication and empowerment. Michael is an activist for human rights, particularly concerning second-generation immigrants.
